Ice Age 3 Introduction W e previously discussed the impact of climate change on mountain glaciers a few times. Ice age, glacial melt, and rising sea levels (Schmidt, 2003). Increased global temperatures have triggered glacier melt in a wide variety of areas around the world. The glaciers and ice sheets have a large impact on both the water and ice cycle (in addition to other human influences). In this chapter we will look at the history of ice age, glacial melt, and rising sea levels in greater detail and how these factors are related to the hydrologic cycle. Glacier melt is about the melt of ice or glaciers. Glaciers are much larger than ice sheets but are not technically as large as ice caps. Glaciers are masses of ice that form over land and move down- glacier lines. The amount of mass a glacier contains depends on the speed at which the glacier moves. Glaciers as a whole usually move slowly. The glaciers that cover most of the Antarctic ice sheet are thought to be the remnants of former ice ages. Because of the comparatively low temperatures, glacial activity is restricted to the southern hemisphere. The geologic history of glaciers over the last million years can be divided into four phases: glacial advance, deglaciation, glacial retreat, and secondary glaciations. Glaciers form and advance when snowfall exceeds melting, they may retreat when the balance of snowfall and melting is tipped in favor of melting, or they may form from ice that was deposited over an existing base of snow or ice. Glacial retreat during the ice age typically happens in three phases. Ice ages are climatic epochs that are marked by a pronounced cold climate, short duration, and a generally uniform climate. Ice ages are generally marked by multiple glacial advances and retreats during the course of a glacial cycle. Ice ages, of course, are periods of major glaciation, with period of 40, 130, and 400 ky, or 40, 130, and 400 ka. Rising sea levels Rising sea levels are caused by melting glaciers. The glaciers, in turn, are caused by global warming. Both melting of the ice sheets and rising sea levels have a direct impact on our oceans. Rising sea levels are the result of a constant loss of ice caps from the continent and an increase in the volume of the ocean itself. Sea levels began to rise about 6,000 years ago at a rate of about one millimeter per century. More recent evidence suggests a rise rate 648931e174
